figure it out

One of my favorite (that’s American ‘favorite’, which Microsoft understands. I was taught to spell as ‘favourite’. Sorry, I digress) movies is “Donnie Darko”. When a kid asks Jim Cunningham(a motivational speaker) how one can decide what he/she wants to be when one grows up, Jim replies- “I think you should look deep within yourself… deep within your heart… and find what it is in the world that makes you feel LOVE. Just pure LOVE. And then go to that. In your studies… in your athletics… go towards love. “

Our Donnie is pissed off after Jim Cunningham’s  ‘session’ at the school. Donnie comes to the stage and says—“ Well, Jim, I think you’re full of shit! I’ll tell you something, that was some of the worst advice I’ve ever heard! You’re never gonna know what you want to be when you grow up. Most of the time, nobody does. You know it takes a little, little while to find that out. How about you, Jim?”

The context or why I was talking about this particular scene: Well, I’m neither the guy who answers nor the one who knows. I just remembered the movie and the scene because I met a few students who are starting the graduate school. I’m sure all of them will do very well and soon figure out how things work. But, when you start school, that too after a few years break, you are worried and you are full of doubts. You unknowingly seek validation whether you did the right thing, right? You had a well paying job. You had your family back home. And now, all of a sudden, you hear a thousand new things and they make you think of thousand new challenges. And you start thinking– What the hell did I do? Where did I land up? What courses to take? What is important? What should I do?

Easy. Easy fellas. You will figure it out. It takes a little while to figure it out, but you’ll do just fine. As the ancient wisdom says, take a deep breath. And a few more. I can tell you from my experience, I didn’t have to worry. I came here to do a few things and focused my time and energy on that. I selected my courses based on that. Processes aligned with the strategy, as someone might say. Your wants and needs will be different. What worked for me may not work for you and vice versa. Each of us is unique, just like everyone else (I couldn’t stop that one ;) . You get the point, right?

Nope. I’m not your agony aunt. I just had some time to write something. And I decided to write. May get a serotonin kick if you say it helped..
